CAUTION: TECHNICAL LINGO BEYOND
Schumph is the brand name of a style of front chainring planetary drive. Schlumpf drives give you the ability without wires, shifters or sets of independently sized chain rings, to store a dual shifting highly versatile drive into a simple package.
I have a Schlumpf HSD (High Speed Drive) on the front of the “tiger duck”, the nickname of my trike, and I could not be happier. The Schlumpf takes away a lot of the clutter, and houses the gearing assembly in a housing that is sealed from the elements. The Schlumpf I have provides me with a standard gearing option unengaged, but with a literal click of my heels can step up all my gears by a ratio of 1.65. When you click to the higher ratio, the mechanics are all internal, there are no chain movements or smaller or larger rings. It’s a simple click of the heel… that’s it.
I feel like Dorothy when I ride.
“There’s no gear like schlumpf * click *, theres no gear like schlumpf * click *!”
I chose my drive based on my riding torque, but they have many options and ratios. Check them out if you are interested.
